Dance Ensembles

From traditional folk dancing to modern forms of dance, dancing is a part of culture and holds a meaning. The folk dance “Hopak,” for instance, would be a dance of celebration of returning from battle, lifting spirits and connecting the community. The dance companies listed below are all Ukrainian-founded and promote the culture and the traditions within. 

ARKAN Dance Company

Since 1995, Arkan Dance Company has been instructing students, specialising in dance techniques unique to Ukraine, such as the traditional folk dances, as well as more modern pieces. This company puts on performances for the general public to see and appreciate the Ukrainian culture depicted through dance. 

 

Desna Ukrainian Dance

Desna is a dance company and school that has been entertaining audiences in Canada and abroad for over 45 years. This company believes in the preservation of Ukrainian folk dances and other dance styles historically significant to the culture, and the integration of newer forms and styles as a testament to the ever-expanding traditions and culture. 

 

Ensemble - Ukrainian School of Dance

“Ukraina” Dance Ensemble unites passion for Ukrainian culture with passion for dance, performing for audiences with shared passions across the world. 

 

Barvinok Ukrainian Dance School

Barvinok Ukrainian Dance School, having started out in the church basement of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, has come a long way in its 52 years of instruction. This school aims to “nurture Ukrainian heritage” through their teachings. 

 

Yavir School of Ukrainian Dance 

Yavir School of Ukrainian Dance has been instructing Ukrainian dance for 60 years. The instructors are all passionate about Ukrainian culture and make it a goal to contribute to and capture the Ukrainian-Canadian spirit.
